In Excuse me, who are you?, Lin reimagines the Annunciation, a subject traditionally depicted with the angel towering above Mary as she passively accepts her divine fate. Here, however, Mary closes her eyes and raises her hand in refusal, shifting the balance of power. Instead of submission, she embodies autonomy, confronting the angel as an equal and questioning his intrusion: “Excuse me, who are you?” By reclaiming territorial awareness and the right to consent, Lin’s Mary symbolizes the awakening of collective feminine consciousness and the rejection of imposed destinies.
《Excuse me, who are you?》において、林は「受胎告知」という主題を再解釈している。伝統的な宗教絵画では、天使は高い位置から現れ、マリアは神によって定められた運命を受動的に受け入れる存在として描かれてきた。
しかし本作では、マリアは目を閉じ、手を挙げて拒否の意思を示す。その身振りによって、従来の力関係は反転される。彼女はもはや服従の象徴ではなく、自らの主体性を持つ存在として天使と対峙し、その侵入を問い返す――「すみません、あなたは誰ですか」と。
この行為は、領域意識と同意の権利を取り戻す動作であり、林の描くマリアは、外部から課された運命を拒否し、自律へと向かう集団的な女性意識の象徴として立ち現れている。
