In this work, Lin portrays Maria with closed eyes and a disdainful expression, accompanied by the phrase “Too wise to be cute.” The painting critiques the cultural tendency of men to prize young women for their innocence and pliability, while perceiving intelligence and self-awareness as diminishing femininity. Based on her observations, Lin reveals how this paradox shapes expectations of women. By reimagining Maria beyond her traditional image as the endlessly virtuous mother, the work symbolizes women’s refusal to remain bound by conventional ideals of beauty and virtue, reclaiming wisdom as power rather than a threat to femininity.
本作において林は、目を閉じ、わずかに軽蔑の表情を浮かべながら「賢すぎて、可愛くなれない」と語るマリアを描いている。このイメージは、社会において男性が若い女性の「無垢さ」や「扱いやすさ」を称揚する一方で、知性や自己意識を女性性の弱体化として捉えてしまうという矛盾を批評している。
林はこの観察を通して、そのような矛盾がいかに女性像を形成してきたかを可視化する。同時に本作は、聖母を単なる徳の象徴として描く伝統的な枠組みを逸脱し、女性がもはや規範的な美徳に縛られることを拒否する姿を示している。ここで知性は、女性性への脅威ではなく、主体性と力の回復として再定義されている。
